• Ferras’ CD fails to make a splash

Pop singer Ferras’ new CD Aliens & Rainbows didn’t make a big splash on this week’s Billboard 200 after selling only 3,087 copies its first week out. It deserves a better fate than this, and still has room to grow, for sure.

But those sales were enough for the Gillespie, Il’s home boy’s debut to come in at No. 9 on the magazine’s Top Heatseekers chart, reserved for developing acts.

The single, one-time American Idol exit song “Hollywood’s Not America, recently debuted at No. 84 on the Hot 100 singles chart, then rose three notches the next week. The song is making a bigger impression on the Adult Top 40 chart.

National press has been mixed in reviewing Aliens & Rainbows. Billboard said the CD is an;action-packed collection of high-gloss piano-pop production numbers,and called the disc a & rollicking good time."

But Entertainment Weekly, giving the CD a C- grade, called the single sappy, with the rest of the CD only offering a little more. “Even Ferras’ best tunes suffer from overly slick production, and his weak quack of a voice does them no favors. Don’t hold your breath waiting for gold at the end of these ‘Rainbows."

Ferras will be performing at z100's Zootopia '08 on May 17th. The complete line-up will be announced this Monday at 5 PM, and tickets go on sale this Friday at 4 PM to ZVIPs.

A few weeks ago, "American Idol" did its Hollywood shows. A little song called "Hollywood's not America" served as those two programs' farewell song.
The tune was written and sung by singer/songwriter Ferras (pronounced fur-AHS), and has already sold more than 20,000 digital singles. He's appeared on "Today," and his new CD, "Aliens and Rainbows," will be released on Tuesday. Incidentally, that's the date he'll be opening up for Fine Frenzy at the Avalon.

Ferras was on the road somewhere between North Carolina and Virginia when a Deseret Morning News reporter caught up with him by phone.

"I have always loved the power of music," said Ferras (born Ferras Alqaisi in 1982). "If someone made me mad on the playground, I wouldn't go hit him. I'm small and I would've probably gotten messed up pretty bad if I did anything like that. No. What happened was the fact that I would go home and write a song about how mad or hurt I was. If I liked a girl, I'd go home and write a song about how pretty she was."

Ferras was introduced to the likes of Elton John and a slew of singer/songwriters such as Cat Stevens, Joni Mitchell, Lionel Richie, Stevie Wonder, Tori Amos and David Bowie

April 01, 2008 - Hey Everyone!! Right now I’m in Denver, CO on my way to KALC to do a performance- its 7 30am and I’m barely awake hehe. Today is the BIG DAY!!! I’ve pretty much been waiting my whole life to have my cd in stores and today ima go everywhere cd’s are sold and stare in awe at the shelves lol. Local Targets Beware!! Ima comin!! Haha. Ok so seriously I just wanna say I’m so ecstatic right now- I really hope everyone runs out and gets their very own copy of Aliens & Rainbows and loves it! I know I put a year and half of my heart and soul into writing it and I really believe its something special. Let me know what you guys think- drop me a msg on my phone or leave one on myspace. Get on itunes- write your reviews- let’s make this record a classic!!!!

Again, I love each and every one of you- I couldn’t ask for better peeps! You guys are supportive and it doesn’t go unnoticed! Even people at my record label are like WOW- ur fans are awesome. Last night in my hotel room here in Denver, I listened to a bunch of messages from you guys and I was beside myself with emotion! This is a pretty scary and nerve wracking time for any artist- having their cd out-(especially their first one) the world starts to take notice- some build you up, others try to tear u down- and when u have the support of peeps like u- that’s all that matters. I’m on my way back to LA after the station visit and I start rehearsing for my performance on the Tonight Show on thurs. Capitol Music Group recording artist Ferras (pronounced Fer-AHSS) has released release his debut album, ‘Aliens and Rainbows.’ The work of the audacious young artist has already attracted the attention of the hit Fox series "American Idol," which will use lead single "Hollywood's Not America" in the episodes for Hollywood Week.

"Aliens and Rainbows is about that other place where you go in your mind, when you just want to escape - when the world lets you down, when you feel misunderstood," says Ferras. "It is a place for dreamers and misfits and outsiders."

It's a place he's spent a lot of time in. Growing up in a small town in southern Illinois, Ferras always felt out of place - a feeling only compounded when one day his father took him to the airport, promising a trip to Disneyland, but instead spiriting him away to Amman, Jordan. Ferras took solace in the little Casio keyboard his father bought him and began writing songs.

Produced by The Matrix (Avril Lavigne, Jason Mraz, Korn) with their frequent collaborator Gary Clark (Natalie Imbruglia, Lloyd Cole), ‘Aliens and Rainbows’ is a daring, ambitious pop record, a fresh reminder that sometimes it takes an outsider to give voice to the emotions buried deep inside us all.

From the anthemic "Liberation Day" and the silky ballad "Soul Rock" to the celebratory "My Beautiful Life" and sensual plea of "Take These Lips," there is an urgency to Ferras' work. He approaches a big pop hook the way a Formula One driver approaches a straightaway: he floors it. The energy is palpable, the songs transcendent. And while there are nods to his influences - Bowie, The Beatles, Elton John - the songs are infused with a distinctly personal sensibility.

"From the start, all I wanted to do was write and sing songs that would make people feel something," says Ferras. "I'm grateful to have gotten the opportunity to be who I am, for the journey that led me to this moment."

Ferras' music has already invaded millions of living rooms, thanks to his sappy power ballad ''Hollywood's Not America'' showing up as the exit theme for some of this season's American Idol losers. The rest of the L.A. singer's debut on Aliens and Rainbows has only a bit more to offer: ''Liberation Day'' is a decently fun Beatles rip, and ''Blame Blame Blame'' packs antsy new-wave charm. Yet even Ferras' best tunes suffer from overly slick production, and his weak quack of a voice does them no favors. Don't hold your breath waiting for gold at the end of these Rainbows.

The Grade: C-
